Long hair requires a little bit more attention than short hair. However, with the right steps it is relatively easy to maintain beautiful hair. Below are a few tips that will substantially improve the looks of your long hair.
1. Use Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is your best friend when it comes to hair care. Not only does coconut oil make your hair healthier and help it grow faster, it is also 100% natural and free of harsh chemicals.
Vitamin E and other essential nutrition present in coconut oil, increase your hair’s strength and greatly improve shine. We recommend applying a small amount of coconut oil to your hair 2-3 times a month. The results will be smoother, softer and silkier hair.
Note: Do not leave the oil in your hair for more than a day without washing it. It will make your hair smell bad and become greasy.
2. Avoid Heated Tools
You are probably aware that although your flat iron or blow dryer can make your hair look great, they can also permanently damage it. That is because extreme heat creates breakage in your hair. Use them very sparingly.
3. Do Not Comb Wet Hair
Wet hair is especially vulnerable to breakage. Brushing is a one of the roughest things you can do to your hair, especially if it is long. Wait until your hair is completely dry to avoid unnecessary hair fall.
4. Wash Your Hair Every Other Day
Washing your hair everyday strips your hair of all the nutrients and natural oils necessary for healthy hair. This can lead to breakage, loss of shine and overall dry hair.
Washing your hair every other day with a good quality shampoo will slow down oil production and leave you with healthier and stronger hair.
5. Use A Conditioner
A good conditioner is a must for healthy hair. It will not only soften your hair, add shine, and prevent dryness, but also add a layer of protection that guards against harsh chemicals, heated tools, and everything else that can damage your hair. However those should be avoided anyways (see below).
6. Trim Your Hair Frequently
It is very important to get regular haircuts to keep your long hair healthy. Long hair is usually more fragile because of its age and needs trims more frequently than shorter hair. We recommend trimming your hair every 3 months to minimize split ends.
Make sure to tell your hairstylist that you are trying to grow your hair and that she should only trim half an inch or less of the ends.
7. Don’t Use Harsh Chemicals
Harsh Chemicals in hair products are too strong and can ruin your hair in the long run. Approach a more natural hair care and use mild products instead.
Also avoid perms, hair dye and other chemical hair treatments if possible.
8. Avoid Hairstyles That Put Stress On Your Roots.
If you wear a braid or ponytail, make sure it isn’t pulled too tightly, as it can lead to bald spots and hair breakage.
9. Cover Your Hair Before You Go Swimming
Chlorine or salt have a drying effect on your hair and lead to breakage.
10. Adapt a Healthy Diet
A healthy diet is not only important for your overall health but also for your hair. A diet rich in protein and iron will keep your hair healthy and strong. Also include foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, such as salmon and walnuts, to keep you hair nourished and shiny.
11. Get Enough Sleep
Stress and lack of sleep can lead to hair loss and reduce hair growth. During the sleeping phase the body spends time on repair and growth, so it is important to get at least 8 hours of sleep every day.
12. Use Satin Or Silk Pillowcases
Unlike rougher materials, satin and silk pillowcases reduce friction that leads to hair breakage and split ends.
