Many people, especially kids, get infected by head lice every year. Although they are not dangerous to human health, they can get quite annoying and difficult to deal with. The biggest problem today is, that lice have become resistant to many over-the-counter treatments.
If you have been searching for a simple and easy way to get rid of lice, you have probably come across the rumor that hair dye will kill lice.
So, Will Hair Dye Kill Lice?
Unfortunately, it is only a rumor. Although it is true that the chemicals in most hair dye and bleach are toxic to lice, it will only kill adult and baby lice. Lice eggs (nits) however, have a shell that is strong enough to protect against those chemicals. So using hair dye to kill lice might kill all the active ones however as soon as the eggs hatch, the cycle will resume. Using hair dye is not a good way to treat lice.
Also keep in mind that people with dyed or bleached hair are not any more immune against getting hair lice than people with natural hair. So dying your hair as a preventive measure will not work.
How to Kill Lice
There are many over-the-counter treatments that can be purchased and used to kill lice. Some are more effective than others, but all of them will be more effective than hair dye. Over-the-counter treatments are relatively safe for humans and usually carry only a few minor side effects like itching or irritation of the scalp.
Prescription medicine will usually only be prescript, if over-the-counter products did not work or the patient is allergic to them. However, in most cases a prescription will not be necessary and should be avoided because of much greater risk of side effects, such as seizures.
